Wood Scientist Winner at TTJ Awards
At the 2017 TTJ Awards, held recently at the prestigious “Brewery” venue in The Barbican, London, amongst the six short-listed candidates in the Career Development category were 3 newly-qualified wood scientists.
Toby Hughff, Christ Wait and Martin Peacock have spent most of the last 18 months studying for the Level 4 Certificate in Wood Science and Timber Technology and all three passed the challenging exams held in March 2017, with both a credit and a distinction between them. These 3 students, together with 8 others from James Latham, 3 from Jewsons, 2 from Palmer Timber and one other from Ridgeons, who was also nominated, began the new course of study in late 2015, when it was launched by timber education and training company TFT Woodexperts Ltd, in response to demand following success for students of the Level 2 course after the TTJ Awards in 2015.
“We are thrilled and delighted that the Timber Industry has chosen to honour their efforts and commitment in this way” Jan went on, “and we are pleased and grateful that some of the top names in our industry – which also now includes Arbor Forest Products, Danzer (UK) and Hanson Plywood, who were all either nominated or were winners of awards themselves – chose to support their staff in their career development. Piers Latham, HR Director of James Latham plc also said, of his company’s students, “Lathams are always looking for talented people to fill various roles within the business. We look after our staff” he said, “and like to treat people properly”
As previously reported in last month’s TTJ, all the nominees are also to be rewarded in the near future by the now-traditional trip to Ireland by sponsors Glennon Bros. The visit will include a sawmill tour and factory visit, as well as the opportunity to sample the legendary hospitality of the Irish. TFT Woodexperts are holding the next set of Examinations as we go to press, with a further 22 students already enrolled and studying towards the Wood Science and Timber Technology qualification for 2018.
John Park, Chairman of the Board of the Wood Technology Society of the IOM3 said “they [the Award nominees] were some of the unique few in the UK with such a qualification” and that their employers were “very cognisant of the value of that knowledge they now possess”.
